Gum Therapy :: Treating Periodontal Disease
Dental diseases are the most common illnesses affecting people other than the common cold! 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease, but the majority do not realize it.
Tooth brushing cleans the smooth surfaces of the teeth and is an excellent way to prevent cavities. Gum disease starts in between the teeth. Regular toothbrushes can't reach these critical areas and many people choose not to regularly floss or are unable to floss effectively.
Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums that is reversible. However, periodontal disease is gum and bone disease. In this case, the infection has spread from the gum into the bone and permanent damage has occurred. There are several stages of this disease. If detected early, it can be controlled. Warning signs of this condition are as follows:
- Gums that bleed during tooth brushing
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
- Persistent bad breath
- Cloudy discharge between the teeth and gums
- Loose or separating teeth
- A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
- A change in the fit of partial dentures
It is possible to have gum disease without these warning signs!
Periodontal Disease is a serious bacterial infection that may increase your risk for a variety of health concerns including:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Pre-term low birth babies
- Osteoporosis
- Gastric ulcer
- Lung and respiratory diseases
- Other degenerative diseases that are life threatening
It's not just about your teeth anymore!
Periodontal disease can be a disfiguring disease. Your gums swell in size and become very red and angry looking. They may bleed very readily. Your teeth may shift and dark spaces between your teeth may start showing. The teeth then become loose and may need to be removed.
Early detection as with other diseases is the key to successful treatment. Dr. Blass and her hygiene team will routinely perform a gum disease screening and exam. The American Dental Association recommends this at least once a year. The results of this exam will determine your periodontal status. If you have periodontal disease your treatment will be personalized for you and your level of infection.
